EVROS Artist's Book

The Evros River separates Greece from Turkey. This region has always been a cultural crossroads. The meeting point between East and West. Today, it is once again at a crossroads. It is one of the main gateways for migrants trying to reach Europe. Thousands still attempt the crossing every year, in the hope of a better future.

How do you talk about a subject as vast and complex, as rooted in harsh daily reality as it is in fantasy? EVROS was born of this reflection. Not to try to understand everything, but rather to feel and make people feel, via several stories and objects forming a few pieces of a larger puzzle. Not simply documenting events, but rather creating an aesthetic and emotional experience that goes beyond the bare facts.

This artist's book is made up of 177 photos and texts from a 6-month documentary photographic fieldwork in Greece and Turkey, including sharing the daily life of a group of migrants attempting to cross the river to Europe. Divided into 8 objects within the box, it offers a non-linear, physical, and tactile narrative. Each fold, each texture is an invitation to exploration and discovery.

The box and each of the objects are entirely handmade. The cover is made from a unique cyanotype print. Edition of 15 + 2 EA.

2. Shores

Saki is a Greek fisherman living in the Evros Delta. He is also part of the unofficial border watch. Lusi is a Turkish farmer reconverted trafficker who offers his services to the migrants and refugees trying to cross the border. They live less than 10 kilometers away from each other. One on each side of the river.

3. Ithaca

Ithaca by the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy. Since Homer’s Odyssey, Ithaca symbolizes the destination of a long journey, the supreme aim that every man tries to fulfill, the sweet homeland, the eternal calmness, and satisfaction.
Once the Evros river crossed, the journey is far to be over. You need to traverse the Jungle. That’s the name the refugees give to this region’s mountains covered in forests. This is a hard and long journey. Between two and three weeks by walk. Traces of their passage.

4. Almeria

The Almeria hotel is located in Edirne, Turkey, a few kilometers from the border. Before its closure at the end of 2020, it was the drop-off point for many migrants between two attempts to reach Europe.
A place to regroup and to lick their wounds. A place of suspension, crazy plans, and broken dreams.

5. Nameless

Every year dozens of migrants’ corpses are found in the Evros river. Given the state of the bodies, any visual identification is usually impossible. Instead, their belongings are recovered and catalogued with the hope that a relative will have a chance to access them and recognize one of the objects. This is rarely successful. Most often, there is another zip bag added to the boxes stacking in the coroner’s office.

6. The Game

The Game, as the migrants call it, is the name given to each attempt to cross the border and reach Europe. A lino-printed map of the Evros region and of the Jungle, the Greek forests which took a mythical aura to whose who try to walk their way through it.

7. Reports

Information, statistics, and reports from the border.
